Company Holiday Party

So I ventured out on my own last night over to Chantilly, VA for my division of General Dynamic's Holiday Party. The first thing that I thought was strange was upon getting to the hotel was that we were directed to park up the road (at the company HQ no less)...so I was already thinking there must be a ton of people here. Upon parking the car I noticed the company hired out swanky tour buses to take us to and from the hotel.

Westfields Marriott

Can you say "wow" (after checking the link to the hotel above)! Color me impressed, a full service party with hors d'oeuvres always coming around via waiters/waitresses and multiple bars (we each received tickets for 2 drinks, and water/juice/soda was unlimited). Casino rooms where one took fake money that was handed to us to try to get more raffle tickets, free portraits, full course dinner, and even rooms set up with Wii's and XBox's!

Luckily, I met up with a few coworkers and hung out with them most of the night. Alas, this one event I should have tried to bring a date to, because there was nothing but couples there...oh well, live and learn. That being said, I didn't stay all the way until til midnight, and left a tad bit early...had to beat the freezing rain that was forecast for the overnight hours. To think, it was all free and the only thing it truly cost me was the gas to drive out the 20 or so miles to and from Chantilly.

PS. Of course, this extravagance makes me think how much our government overpays for contracts...but oh well...I'm one of the dirty ones, so I shouldn't complain!

Oh so bad...but oh so good:

Saw this on Yahoo! in a post about worst food at the mall. I've been doing the double orange chicken thing lately too!

WORST CHINESE MEAL
Panda Express
Orange Chicken
500 calories
27 g fat (5.5 g saturated, 1 g trans)
42 g carbs
810 mg sodium

FAT EQUIVALENT: 9 strips of Oscar Mayer Bacon!

Compared to other traditional Chinese meals (think multi-serving takeout boxes of carb-loaded lo mein), 500 calories doesn’t seem so bad. But consider the source—one small serving of Panda Express orange chicken usually comes with a second entrĂ©e (add another 300-400 calories) and a side of rice (add 450 calories if you choose the fried variety, 380 for the steamed). Make it a double serving of orange chicken and a side of fried rice and you’ve just consumed 75 percent of your day’s calories in one moment of weakness.

Coolio

Well, I had the luncheon today. It was pretty cool...even if it was a buffet-like place...but hey, free food while on the clock is always good right! Anyways, I actually won a door prize! I won a blue iPod Shuffle 1GB and an $10 iTunes gift card. Pretty cool...now I just need to get rid of the silver one I wasn't even using anymore. LOL

Ugh...

Man...I'm getting old. I've been nursing a sore neck since waking up Sunday morning. I blame those Gel pillows I bought at Target only a few months ago, which are already pretty damn flat. So I bought some nice firm ones...at a place I'd never thought I step foot in without my mom, and that would be TJ Maxx!

In other news, I'm still loving my current company, for one they gave us these very nice Cross ink pens, then we have a free luncheon tomorrow...and then this weekend I will we be going stag to our company holiday party at a Marriott...all the way in Chantilly. I wasn't going to go to the latter; but decided to be adventurous and check it out. Oh, and there's a good chance I may actually get a bonus! Haven't seen something like that since my Food Lion days. :D

Hard to believe Christmas is next week!? I hardly notice its impending arrival except when I try to brave D.C. retail establishments...yikes, what recession? haha

Splitting Hairs

So yeah, the big dilemma of growing out my hair has been the fact I'm so used to having it short-ish and within Air Force regs. Needless to say that isn't an issue anymore...and now that it has been at least 2 months since I last got it cut, the new dilemma is to cut what part. Some say trim the sides...get it touched up...etc. Who knows...all I know is I actually kind of enjoyed the below experiment:

New stuff

Thought I'd share a pic of a recent acquisition from Crystal City...and an update on what my shaggy hair looks like. It's taking a lot of fight to resist the urge to hit up the barber. Especially since the hair is starting to curl in places...like in one random corner on the front! (It's done up in this photo BTW.)

Oh, and like my new sweater? I can so tell I'm getting older though, I never used to own any sweaters!

Since my rent went up with the new lease...

...it would be nice to save a little extra money a month. That being said, I picked up an over-the-air antenna for my TV. I then let my awesome Sony TV search for HD channels and it found at least 20 crystal clear ones (to include SD broadcasts). The quality is just as good as my cable! So yeah, gonna cancel cable TV service with Comcast and just keep their internet...which will probably save me at least $50/month. Thank you Circuit City for actually carrying an antenna like this. Oh, and the antenna is not even some rabbit ear thing...it's actually a flat black plastic piece that is less than an inch thick.

woot!

Tis the season...

I'm sure some of my readers know of the web comic, Penny Arcade. If you've ever perused through their archives you wouldn't think it; but these guys rock. For you see, every year around the holidays for what seems at least the last 5 years they run a charity called "Child's Play". Basically they let children's hospitals all around the world set up wish lists for items on Amazon.com. It started off as just video games (hence the name), but now the hospitals will ask for books, toys, movies, etc. Anyways, I've always watched it but never actually donated anything...until now. I decided I should spread my good fortune onto others, so I bought 3 things for the Carillion Medical Center for Children in Roanoke, VA. No games though, I actually bought them 2 DVDs...one being my favorite movie of the year, Wall*E...and the other item being an Espanol book of "Where the Wild Things are".

I highly suggest, if you have the means, to donate a little something...these guys ask for the cheapest books all the way to an XBox for the kids to play with as they try to get better.

Random sight of the day

So, I was sitting on my couch watching Wall*E's bonus features when I looked over and saw this sight. It's my new Arc mouse's shadow cause by the bright blue LED on my computer speakers.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

Take time today to think of all that you are thankful for...I know I have!

Oh, and turkey day bonus...I was all dressed up with quarters in hand to go buy today's Washington Post, when I opened my door this morning and saw a paper right in front of my door! Now that's customer service (take note, I'm only a Sunday subscriber).

007 Rocks (of course)!

So yeah, I won't spoil too much; but "Quantum of Solace" was great. I will admit it is interesting to have a Bond flick that actually continues the storyline of the previous film (minus the old S.P.E.C.T.R.E. continuity of some of the older films).

On a side note, they had a trailer for the new "Star Trek" movie by JJ Abrams. Actually looks good...and I may actually see it. Haven't seen anything Trek-related since I left home (Dad's kind of a Trekkie...me, not so much).

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Hey Steve Jobs...

I bought your movie today...not on iTunes...and not on DVD. On that format you seem to think is dead, Blu-Ray. Oh, and guess waht, for 5 bucks more I got a digital copy. There's no way I'll be buying movies via downloading until I have a MUCH faster internet connection. Oh, and I find it funny that the Pixar Blu-Rays are some of the most highly-rated discs out there. LOL

That's the number of ticket requests that Senator Webb's office has fielded so far. Wow.

Just put myself on Senator Webb's waiting list for inaugural tickets.

Wow...I am the suck

So, here's something for you. I'm 30 years old, been around the world, and survived a tour of duty in Iraq...and I was so nervous to call the girl back from Friday night. Well, I finally got over myself and gave her a call just now...but got the voice mail. Which is like a blessing and a curse, well, more like a curse. My life acting like a TV show continues yet again, with me leaving a slightly stumbling around message. Gah! I'm stoked I called though; and would be even more so if she calls me back. Oh, and I almost pussed out by just sending her a text message...

Then there's this other girl I kind of like too...now my question is where are they coming from all of the sudden?

What a weekend

So, now that Bobby is officially single again, it's been a bit harder to stay in on the weekends. Although after the great week I (and the country) had last week, I was down for a bit of celebrating this weekend. Needless to say I went out both nights...and I have been tired ever since. I plan on recouping some sleep tonight/tomorrow. That being said, I won't get in to too much detail about what transpired...although shy Mikey has reared it's ugly head, and as I type this out I'm currently too nervous to call this girl I met on Friday night! I mean, heck, I'm 30 years old...this should not even be an issue.

So tomorrow is Veteran's Day...and I have it off. I actually only have on thing planned and that is to head over to Air Force Memorial just up the hill from me and take some time to reflect.

Finally, "Quantum of Solace" comes out this weekend! Already have a group all set to go on Saturday night...I'll be sure to post up here with my full opinions.

After spying my GTI sitting in front of my old apartment in Yorktown a few months ago, I yearned for Google to update their maps with Street View around Northern VA/D.C.  Well, it's up now...sweet.

End of the night...and I can't sleep...

...because I'm so excited! I actually went up to my roof after Barack's acceptance speech to let out a yell or two and just let it all in (being so close to D.C. and all) . I'm not even going to touch the cell phone picture to keep the rawness of it.

That being said, for all those who don't think so, I love and respect John McCain. In fact, he was a favorite of mine way back in 2000 for the GOP nomination. He has done great things for our country and it's a shame his party turned him into something he wasn't not too long ago (and his not-so-great running mate). I think we all saw the real John during his concession speech. He's more of a man than I can ever aspire to be! Here's to him continuing to serve our great country.

Now, as for Barack, I just hope everyone takes his speech to heart. Because even if you didn't vote for him, we all need to come together as a country. We have made history tonight America, and we need to chart a new course to get us out of the messes we are in.

I love my country!

PS. Peep my "I voted in Arlington" sticker in the picture above. :D

PS PS. Congrats again to Sen. Mark Warner as well! Wish I kept that invite to his HQ/party...but alas, mikey wanted a date and couldn't find one (at least locally). Haha

Love,
Michael

Something besides the election & halloween.

Just finished reading this touching story...it's a long read, but well worth the time:

http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ki-negler110208&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

On a side note, I was saddened to see Barack's grandmother won't live to see her grandson become the president of our great country. Stay strong Obama family! :(

Halloween 2008

You know the strangest thing? I can't even remember the last time I dressed up for Halloween. I think I may have been in costume 7 years ago in Korea; if not, it's been since I was a young child. Anyways, this costume required me to drive deep into Maryland and also let my hair grow out. Speaking of that hair, I'm currently wrestling with the idea of letting it grow out even more. Heck, at this point this is the longest it's been since that time between high school and the Air Force.

Halloween 2008

Click above for all the pictures (I should be adding more soon as my friends post others). I'm dressed as Dr. John (J.D.) Dorian from one of my favorite TV shows, "Scrubs". Anyways, it was a great night, and I saw a lot of awesome costumes. I think this may be a new thing for me...it was great getting the costume together and keeping it secret from my friends until they saw me last night. :D

What a coup...first Colin Powell, now this!

Alaska's largest newspaper endorses Obama

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska's largest newspaper, endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Sunday after declaring Gov. Sarah Palin "too risky" to be one step away from the Oval Office.

"Like picking (Republican presidential candidate John) McCain for president, putting her one 72-year-old heartbeat from the leadership of the free world is just too risky at this time," The Daily News said.

The newspaper said Obama "brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand."

The Daily News said since the economic crisis has emerged, McCain has "stumbled and fumbled badly" in dealing with it.

"Of the two candidates, Sen. Obama better understands the mortgage meltdown's root causes and has the judgment and intelligence to shape a solution, as well as the leadership to rally the country behind it," the paper said.

The Daily News said Palin has shown the country why she is a success as governor. But the paper said few would argue that Palin is truly ready to step into the job of being president despite her passion, charisma and strong work ethic.

"Gov. Palin's nomination clearly alters the landscape for Alaskans as we survey this race for the presidency — but it does not overwhelm all other judgment. The election, after all is said and done, is not about Sarah Palin, and our sober view is that her running mate, Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation," the paper said.

Streets are blocked...

because today is the Marine Corps Marathon. As much as I run, I don't think I'll ever attempt a full marathon. I'll stick with my 5k's and maybe a half-marathon in the future.

Diabetes Walk Wrap-Up

Well, today was the "Step Out For Diabetes" walk, so I thought my donors would like a report on the event. First off, our team (General Dynamics Information Technology) had a goal of $2,000 raised, and we beat that by about $700, so thanks to Mom & Dad and Nana & Granddad for donating! I think we all know how close to home this hits, so it was honor for you all to come together and sponsor me (don't worry, I donated as well!) As for the walk itself, it kind of sucked realizing late last night that I didn't have a raincoat perse, so I actually drug one of military gortex jackets out of retirement for what was going to be a rainy morning. We got lucky though, because we didn't have any rain at all during the walk. We started out in front of the Capitol (which even with living here, is still an awesome sight to behold), then trecked our way around for 2 miles through the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. Heck, I even say a pumpkin carved with Obama's logo along the way!

Of course, the rain did come today...but luckily not until I was safe and sound in my apartment. :)

3rd time

So I wore the Obama shirt for the 3rd time today (after work, of course). Needless to say, I keep getting compliments in person, and online. Of course, I get the sneers too...but hey, it's only fair! After all I did say something a few days ago about shaking my head outside McCain HQ.

Saturday, October 18, 2008

It's here!

It's a tad small (since I'm so used to generic medium t-shirts being so baggy and such...but this thing is skin tight).

Needless to say, I will be rocking this as much as I can until election day. Speaking of which, I live a block or so away from McCain's national HQ...and I happened to walk by this morning while cooling down from my run. That was place sure was hopping...people outside and a ton of people on the phones inside. I just walked by and shook my head...

Warning: Passionate Rant Ahead

I posted this on a forum I frequent...was getting tired of some the ignorance I was seeing. I can respect for being for your chosen canidate, but when you base it on trivial ignorance such as what I state below...that's just lame:

----------------------------

Why his is name even an issue...it's 2000 freakin' 8 people! It kills me to see these ignorant people still say they don't trust the man because of his name.

"It means he's Muslim!"

Well, he's not! Heck, does it truly matter if he was anyways? This isn't 1607, where a bunch of puratinic folks came across on ships and ran the native people out. We are truly a melting pot...and have been for quite awhile. I think deep down, the same people say it isn't about race, it truly is in the back of their minds. And that's a damn shame...

That being said, I'm glad to see most of you guys involved in these heated discussions....now back up your words with a vote. I'm sure you can find time during the 12 hours or so the polls are open on the 4th. Then I'll respect you, if you're not going to vote you can just keep your mouth shut...

------------------------------------

Yes, your Mikey can be passionate about things if he wants too.

Yay!

After quite a bit of studying, I rocked my "Security +" exam today...which now gives me my second IT certification in less than a month! Man, I love my company...having these 2 babies adds some nice bullets to the old resume if should have to use it again.

Nothing else new, except I ventured deep into Maryland today after my exam, to pick up items for my Halloween costume (it's going to be awesome).

Oh, and the Saints beat the Raiders 34-3...and I was able to see some the game! At a Bailey's no less (those who know me from my second stint in Hampton Roads will get this). Watched the Skins game while I was at it...with some cool company...though it's too bad Virginia still hasn't stopped smoking indoors yet. :P

Finally, here's a sign I'm getting older. Toys R Us is doing it's annual "buy 2 get 1 free" video game sale, I've pretty much participated in this every year going way back to 2001 when they were still in cahoots with Amazon.com. This year, not so much...in fact...I think I'm going to sell off some more of my hardware. Don't worry though, the Playstation 3 and yes, even the Wii are staying for now.

So...

My DC friends will like this....after a 2 weekend break, I do plan on going out at least once this weekend. I was motivated by the fact that Bobby actually called me to go out tonight (which I quickly told him no), but will get with him tomorrow night. Reason being, he's been pretty scarce since moving out of Crystal City and bringing his girlfriend up from Houston. I can't have too many drinks though...because as Homer Simpson would say, "beer kills brain cells", since I will be finally taking my Security + exam on Monday morning (yes, on a day off no less).

Oh, the GOP is so sad resorting to the false truths mud-slinging, as our man Obama tries to run a respectable campaign. :P

Can I vote yet?

Also, I think I've grown to hate the cooler seasons. With my body's build, I've always been one to get cold easy. So as it hits the low 50's here @ night, I anxiously await my building's decision to turn on my heat!

Oh, and a big, big thank you to my parents and my nana/granddad for donating to my diabetes walk! I actually just threw a donation of my own to this very worthwhile (and way-too-close-to-home) cause.

Replaced the iPhone...

...with an iPod Touch! It's nice to be able to fool around with that tech again; because as much as I've grown to love my BlackBerry, I missed so many things about the iPhone. It basically is everything is minus the phone, camera, and no GPS.

In other news, maybe I did catch a cold and not allergies...since instead of sneezing, now I have a stuffy nose and a slight nagging cough. *cough*

Finally, I'm going to be walking on October 25th (happy birthday Aaron!,) with my Company's regional office for the American Diabetes Association. Basically around the Capital Building and the surrounding environs. Look for an email soon!

Allergies suck

I don't seem to recall having allergy issues this time of year (around my birthday), but yet here they are. Went to sleep last night 100%, and woke up this morning to an itchy nose and slight jet-powered triple sneezes. Needless to say my first day back at work after class was fun (by the way, we tested at the end of this class and I actually passed...so I'm officially ITIL certified!) I still have to take my Security + test from that first class I was sent too...but that will come real soon.

In other news, the era of D.C Mikey no longer going out every Friday and Saturday takes effect this weekend. So far I plan to "stay in" both nights...and by staying in, I mean staying away from my bar. Only plan on going there 2-3 times a month...depending on special occasions of course. The only problem is, even sitting here slightly under the weather, I feel like I should be doing something out of the apartment.

Oh well...time to take a Claritin and pass the heck out.

It's Official

Well, I'm 30 years old now. Happened over the weekend actually. That being said, it was pretty cool for the most part. The coolest part had to have been Dan knocking in my door Friday night (I had no idea he was coming down from Maine for the festivities.) Although him being in town did make me miss my 5k the next morning (cause we stayed out too late Friday night). The next day, Aaron and the fellas came into town. Then we met with an old friend of his (and I guess mine too), and met the rest of my friends at a Brazilian Steakhouse for my birthday dinner. This was of course followed by a night @ Rhino, my favorite bar in D.C. Here's more of the tamer pictures from that night:

Saints Aftermath

I just finished uploading all the pictures my Mom took during our trip to watch the Saints come play the Redskins. Even though game didn't end up the way I wanted, and we all sweated off at least 5 pounds due to the record heat that day, I still had an awesome time. Click the below link to check the photos:

7 years later

So today I caught myself watching some 9-11 related programming on the History Channel. 7 years later is still broils me up inside to see the photos and video of the those hijacked airliners crashing into the WTC towers. So on a day as somber as today, I feel a bit yearning to still be in the uniform of our country fighting the good fight. Either way, may this country never forget what happened to it on that morning in early September 2001. :(

yes

46, What color is your car?
Black Magic Pearl :D

49, Have you ever been to Six Flags?
nope...just Busch Gardens and King's Dominion

50, How did you get your worst scar?
from surgery...and that would be because I went to crazy at the gym while in Iraq....hernia sucks!

Tires & Class

Well, the GTI is whole again as of Wednesday...stupid tire warranty only took care of the first $200, so I had to cough up a little over $100 to cover the total cost. Oh well, guess that's better than paying full price.

In other news, I've already been scheduled to attend "Security +" training next week, by my new company. It's basically a class to get you geared up to take an I.T. certification exam. Keep in mind, I've only been with this company since this past Tuesday! So after orientation and this class next week, I'll hardly be @ my actual job.

Sorry about that

Fixed the link to the 5k in the last post.

Scram Gustav!

Well, I finally found another 5k to run, though not as close to home as the last one. That being said, it's just down the road in Old Town Alexandria. Here are some fun facts:

1. New Orleans Rebirth 5K Run/Walk
2. Raises money to help rebuild New Orleans (which will be needed even more now).
3. It's on the morning of my birthday (what a way to celebrate turning 30).

In light of recent events, I expect this race to be full, so I went ahead and registered just to get myself in. This will also be the first time I plan to use the Metro rail to get to and from a run...so we'll see how that goes.

-Gulf Coast: you are in my thoughts-

Saturday, August 30, 2008

Well...that will learn me for taking a joyride.

So today was a beautiful day so I decided to go out for a bit and let the GTI get some exercise. During my travels I ended up on the Beltway heading north towards Maryland, when I decided to take Georgetown Pike to see what it's like. Then about 1/2 a mile down the road, I hear what I would think would be the 3rd worse sound when one is in a car (behind a wreck and engine cutting off), and that was a loud bang followed by a whoosh sound. Never heard that sound before, but I knew what it was. Although I didn't see anything in the road, my front passenger tire went flat in a hurry!

I stopped when I could to check it out...then started to limp down the GW Parkway (this ended up being a mistake). Why's that, because it has no shoulder! Tire eventually got worse, and to the point where I finally hit the exit to Rosslyn and I finally had to pull over. Here's where I thank the high heavens that today was a nice day...because I spent the next 45ish minutes on the shoulder figuring out through my manuals how to take off the tire and put the spare on. Needless to say I did it, although I sweated my ass off doing so (and chose today to wear white shorts...haha).

Anyways, I got it on and made my way to my VW dealer hoping they would still be open...and I got there right after their service dept. closed. Luckily I have a tire warranty, so here's hoping I can cash in and get the same type of tire. Meanwhile my GTI probably smells of burning rubber with that wheel in the back (I do have the windows cracked though).

So yeah, it sucked...but I'm proud I did it by myself...and hopefully I won't be paying a dime out of pocket.

Was sent this by my Granddad:

AP News Wire - Crisis

All of the Wal-Marts across Alabama sold out of ammunition as of yesterday.

A reliable source said that one of the purchasers commented that while Russia

may have invaded Georgia, they sure as hell ain't doin' it to Alabama.

They're here!

Read 'em and weep boys (and girls):

Oh, and as a side note. Hillary was awesome tonight at the DNC...I so can't to hit the voting booth in November (oh, and our former VA governor wasn't too shabby either).

Saturday, August 23, 2008

That was quick

Donated another tiny bit of cash to the Obama/Biden campaign. Scored a free t-shirt in the process....w00t!

Obama-Biden '08

As much as I wanted to see Tim Kaine as the VP pick, I'm happy with the Joe Biden choice. I discovered Joe Biden during the primary season, and I really started to dig him. Although at the time time he was #4 in my book behind Barack, Hillary, and John Edwards. Now Tim Kaine can concentrate on getting VA straight. Well, I guess it's finally time to order a shirt and stickers. ;)

Tickets purchased

Well, Visa loves me right about now. I just finished purchasing tickets to the Saints @ Redskins game:

Upper Level End Zone

Confirmed Attendees:
-Me
-My Mom
-Cameron
-Sarah
-Randi
-Tigger

(and maybe my Dad watching on TV back @ my apartment).

I'm so excited...although it can take it's time getting here. With the week after that being my oh-so-glorious 30th. :P

No worries!

Yes, I've kept a secret from most of you these past few weeks. Now that the secret crisis has been averted, I can now tell you what's up. Basically my current employer wanted to pull out of our contract due to money issues...and are going to do so by the end of the month. Now, here's where being a hard worker pays off...I was asked to stay on the Project Manager of the prime contracting company. I just signed my offer letter today and will be staying put in Crystal City for the time being...except now my checks will be coming from General Dynamics.

Ahhhh...

Never thought I'd say this...

But I'm in no way excited for the new Star Wars coming out this Friday. The me of 9 years ago (when Phantom Menace first came out) or even 3 years ago when the last film came out would consider that blasphemy. Heck, it's Star Wars and it's CG...should be a win-win right? Not in my book..perhaps I'm burnt out of the series. Either way, I'd rather see "Tropic Thunder" instead...or "The Dark Knight" a 2nd time (in IMAX perhaps?)

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Go Team USA!

I love when the Olympics come around...if I'm @ home I pretty much stayed glued to the TV and watch whatever sport happens to be on. That being said, the Opening Ceremonies last night were beyond belief. If you didn't catch all of it (yes, all the way to midnight) , you really missed a special event. I look forward to watching the world in Beijing...one world, one love. :)

In sad news, it's truly a shock about Bernie Mac. R.I.P. funny man. :(

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

Can it be 2009?

Not that I want this year to zoom by...especially when it comes to that special day next month. That being said, I so want to just start school and get out of this whole I.T. thing for good. Or maybe I'm just sick of the contracting world. :P

100 miles!

So yeah, I have the Nike + Sport Kit for my iPod. Basically it works with a tiny transmitter you place in your shoe and tracks distances and times while you run. Well, I bought it back in November as I was getting back into running after my surgery...and today upon syncing it to the computer, Nike informed me I just hit 100 total miles. Not to mention I also completed a goal of running a certain amount in 4 weeks.

24 hours

From now, I should be dead tired...anyways, I'm super excited to be doing a 5k again...it's been 3 years (or more) since my last one. Not going for speed, I just want to finish it without walking.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Big news!

I'm finally going to run a 5k again...and in the very near future! This Saturday to be precise. Again, another reason to love living in Crystal City...the "Crystal City Twilighter", a 5k starting @ 8pm...it will be nice and cool outside. The race will be going through my neighborhood, up by the Pentagon, and back again. One awesome thing is that I've convinced a friend to run with me...so let's hope she can keep up...although she's been marathon training...so I think she'll kick my butt (she doesn't seem to think so though). Although I think my own butt will be kicked after the 2.5 mile mark (out of 3.1), since that's the farthest I've been running lately. Either way I plan to really push it out though, so we'll see!

Besides that, I'm going to see "The Dark Knight" tomorrow night...I so can't wait.

The Box is back

So, my XBox 360 is already back in my hands. With the quick turnaround I was so hoping for a new model...but no, my hopes were dashed when I recognized the serial number. Although they did give me a free 1 Month XBox Live card...which really doesn't matter since I still intend to get rid of it...even if this game announced @ E3 makes me want to keep it:

In other news, I'm off to meet my brother tomorrow for a weekend with my grandparents. Can I survive a weekend in the country and not miss DC? I'm sure...since I'll be with some very loved family members. :)

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

Ahhh...I forgot about them.

So yeah, I never took the SATs back in High School. Currently browsing Amazon for a couple study guides...gotta get it out of this out of the way so I'm good to go when it's time to start applying for schools.

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Boo Microsoft

So my second XBox 360 has gone the way of the DoDo...being sent back to Microsoft as we speak.  So, instead of dealing with this again, I'll be dropping the 360 from my collection.  So from this point on I will be Playstation 3 and Wii only....oh, and must not forget the DS and PSP.

So yeah, good bye XBox...I had some really awesome times with you...but with me playing less and less of this stuff it just makes sense to say goodbye to you.  I wonder how much Gamestop will give me for trade in?

New GI Bill

OMG...I've never been this excited about old Dubya signing something into law...like ever! So if you haven't heard, the new GI Bill basically gives anyone who has served at least 3 years active duty military since 9/11 to what basically amounts to a full ride to a school of their choice. Here are some choice details:

-Tuition paid upfront to the school at the beginning of each term
-Capped at the tuition cost of the most expensive public school in the state
-More expensive schools offering veterans scholarships will be matched dollar for dollar
-Books/Supplies: $1,000/yr. paid upfront and divided by academic term
-Plus a $1,000/month for living expenses

So yeah, they say it will take the VA sometime to get this program in place...but once they do I want to be one of the first ones in line. Bye bye I.T., hello to my dream job teaching! It will take me longer than most, but I am so determined to get there.

Oh, and I'd like to thank both of Virginia's Senators (especially the Bill's founder, Mr. Webb) for honoring the vets of today with this beautiful piece of legislation.

Wall*E rocks...lost iPhone, not so much.

Just a quick update today:

First, saw Wall*E opening night.  I loved and I challenge anyone to see that movie and not fall in love with Wall*E...if you can't you are one heartless SOB.

Second, having your beloved cell phone slip out of your pocket in a cab sucks.  Especially when you don't notice until long after the cab has driven off...and you had no idea what cab company it was.  that being said, I've switched over to Verizon and actually have a Northern Virginia number now...and I'm on a Blackberry.

Yeah.

You can say one thing about me

What's that you ask?  That would be that I don't take the decision to get a tattoo lightly (or quickly).  It took me about 5+ years to get dear old Sonic on my arm way back in 2004.  Now it's halfway through 2008 and I've finally decided to go ahead with my 2nd one.  My brother Aaron is going to kick out the design again and all that needs to happen is for me to decide on final placement.  I can tell you this...it won't be as visible to the everyday viewer of Mikey as Sonic is.  The placement of that aforementioned tattoo is the only regret I have about getting it.

I also have a strong idea about my 3rd and likely final* tattoo...and this will please my Dad.  It actually has to do something with the Lynch side of the family.  Nothing too crazy...but a small version of the Lynch coat of arms in order to rep that Irish heritage of mine.

All this will be coinciding with my next trip back home which will most likely be towards the end of July/early August.

*Although I have always told myself I would tattoo my kid(s) name to me (if I ever even bother having one).

Man...do I live in Seattle?

Because during the last couple weeks, it seems to find a way to rain at least once a day.  Crappy thing is, I had planned on attending the 007 Film Fest after an extended hiatus ("Live and Let Die" is showing tonight).  Oh well...

They Came In!

Wow, so I did not expect my new plates to come in already; but there they were, just sitting in my mailbox.

So yeah, MACFAN didn't last long...I just wasn't digging it on my car.  Plus when I thought of this particular string of alphanumerics; and found out it wasn't taken...I had to jump on it.  Finally, even though I still "Support the Troops", I wanted to go back to the less busy standard plates.

By request

Nothing really new going on in Mikey's life.  I've been enjoying some time at my building's pool, hanging out with Dan before he leaves (to include rooting for his Celtics in the NBA Finals), and figuring out what I can do to get a girl's attention.

Oh, and still awaiting word on our contract at work...but I'm not really worried.  Nevertheless, I need to button up the resume just in case.  Haha

Sunday Adventures

Well, life is still going well for me and I always happen to find something awesomely cool about where I live.  So today, in the interest of doing something on my own I decided to to walk up the trail along the George Washington Parkway (the same one I normally run).  I actually had a backpack packed with a towel since I intended to lay out in the sun...yet, when I arrived @ the park, I decided against it.  So yeah...here are some photos from today.  Don't forget you can click them to get a somewhat larger view.

The VA DMV must love me...

Because I just ordered new plates for the GTI for the second time this year.  I think these will be my keepers though...and going back to a cleaner look too.  Oh, and before anyone asks, you can't see what they say until they come in, which should be ~4 weeks.

Random work

So this week @ work, I'm scoring overtime for the first time in my life.  Problem is, I don't care for it.  I'm working an extra 3 hours a day, Tuesday-Thursday, helping to deploy our new Dell PCs and Monitors.  So why don't I like it?  It would be because by the time I get off...I'm either too lazy to run and/or gym, or if I do, I eat dinner real late.  That and I keep thinking my evenings are pretty much screwed.  So yeah, I think I'm going to do it this week and tell them I'm not interested anymore.  Sure, I could do it for one day or so...but it wouldn't be worth it for the pay.

Blah...oh, and with everything with my apartment building...our pool's opening was delayed.  Man these guys suck at giving out completion dates...I bet if I was even a few days late with my rent they'd be right on me.  Hahaha

Memorial Day 2008

Well, I'm finally going to post this on the blog...this originally posted this past March on my Facebook (which a very limited amount of people have access to).

"So yeah, I can only post this on Facebook because certain people can't see it (unlike MySpace and my public blog). With the horrible news of 4,000 deaths in Iraqi Freedom, a thought has begun to rear it's head once again. What's that thought you ask? That would be me calling up the local (Air) National Guard recruiter for some information.

Anyways, those that have known me for awhile, know that sometimes I think I made mistake leaving the military. Yet as much as I love being a civilian...I still feel a higher calling...a calling that tells me 9 years in uniform wasn't enough. Especially with the apathy of most of my generation to military service.

Oh BTW...this news and these thoughts come almost to the day 10 years ago that I left Virginia for Boot Camp in Texas."

Now before anyone goes crazy and tries to tie me up to a post to prevent from doing anything about this, please be aware I'm still honoring my "wait a full year after I leave the Air Force" before I do anything in relation to this.

Speaking of Dan

My best friend just accepted a job in his home state of Maine...and leaves in 3 weeks.  Talk about the suck. :P

Bond to a Birthday

So, this should be an awesome week. It starts off with the 007 Film Festival I've been going gah-gah over playing my favorite Bond flick, "Goldfinger", tomorrow (although I may or not be seeing it at that particular time). Then the new Indiana Jones movie comes out this week (better be awesome!) The hits keep coming though, because H&M is running its "Friends & Family" sale starting Friday (20% off score!), and finally wrapping up the week by celebrating Dan's birthday...hopefully @ Park (and of course, Rhino).

Wow, I think I may have went a tad bit overboard with the parentheses use...but what the heck. I'm excited...and refreshed from a pretty cool trip back home this past weekend. Free coffee is awesome...but sunburnt sandal feet kinda suck. LOL

Taking that drive

Heading down to Hampton Roads for the weekend (a post Mother's Day/Dad's BDay visit).  Yes, I'm actually tearing myself away from the DC area!  Just finishing up some laundry and waiting for the HOV restrictions to end/traffic...then I'll be on my way.

Scrubs News

Zach Braff posted this on his MySpace:

Dear friends,

Many of you have been understandably confused by the Fairy Tale episode of Scrubs serving as the series finale. It was not. I was not allowed to say it until today, but Scrubs will be moving to ABC for its final season. We are currently filming the 8th and final season. The true finale of the show will air on ABC in the fall. NBC merely promoted the Fairy Tale episode as the finale, as it was the last episode they owned.

Also, several of you were very confused by the fact that Dr. Kelso and Laverne were still working at the hospital in the Fairy Tale episode. Because of the writer's strike, the last remaining episodes for NBC were aired out of order. This is why Dr. Kelso was still chief of medicine. That was not Laverne however, for those of you who have been following closely; it was a new nurse "Shirley" who no one thinks looks anything like Laverne except for JD.

Hope this clears some things up.

peace and love,
zb

Coolness....as long as I own my VW.

For those that didn't know, Volkswagen actually just moved it's American HQ from Michigan to Northern Virginia.  So, if that wasn't cool enough, VW just announced that they are sponsoring DC's major league soccer team, DC United.  I actually found out via an email from VW yesterday offering me 4 free tickets and free parking for being a VW owner to tonight's home game (too short notice for me to cash in on though).  That being said, I await more free tickets...and I plan to buy a proper jersey as soon as they put them up for sale...and finally retire the DC United practice shirt I bought the 1st time I lived here (so like, 8 years ago...LOL).

007...Outdoors?

So, Mikey was able to confirm yet again that he made the right choice moving up here.  In the quest of actually doing something during the week, I was able to discover that the Crystal City business association is running a James Bond outdoor film festival...called "From Crystal City With Love" no less.  Anyways, starting this past Monday they are showing one 007 movie a night starting at sundown...in chronological order of course.  It's actually in a large courtyard just about a block from my apartment!  Totally free and one is welcome to bring food (or enjoy the free samples from the local restaurants), a blanket, or low chair.  Anyways, they had quite the turnout last night...even if it got a bit chilly towards the end of the movie.

Of course, I already own all these lovely movies on DVD, but I'm plan to go just about everyone of them...minus bad weather and the blah  "Diamonds Are Forever" and later Brosnans.  Oh, and if it happens to be raining...since they said it is rain or shine (except for inclement weather...but no umbrellas allowed!  LOL).   Plus they plan on having theme nights and giveaways (including a Crystal City blanket next week to the first 200 people there...score!)

Oh, and it helps to have someone watching the movie with you...which I was lucky to have last night... ;)

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Oh, a 2nd one.

Well, I did it again...I bought another full album online.  Amazon got my money once again due to the album being about $3 less (and the DRM-free is still very appealing) than trusty old iTunes.  Anyways, I'm not ashamed to mention which album I grabbed this time.  It's from Estelle, who is from the UK, and on John Legend's label here in the US.  I discovered her via one of the few channels I watch on TV, VH1 Soul.   Anyways, it's a nice R&B, slight Pop-py album...check it out if you are so inclined.

Playing Mario Kart Wii and GTA IV...so werid going from one extreme to the other.  LOL

Can I sneak in the suitcase?

So, I visited with my Nana & Granddad yesterday at their hotel in Dulles.  They were staying overnight there on the way back to the motherland (Amsterdam).  Needless to say, I loved seeing them both, and it was cool that they wanted my friend Dan to have dinner with us as well.  We had a great time, and Dan commented on how much he liked hearing about their various excursions around the world.  Heck, I thought it was cool that we all had a pint of Sam Adams beer as our dinner beverage of choice (especially with alcohol being such a rarity with most of my family).

They actually flew out a few hours ago...so here's to a safe trip to and from...and seeing them both again sometime this summer (this time back in Covington, VA).

Oh, and my Granddad made a kick ass night stand for me.  He's cool like that. ;)

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Oh...

I shaved my goatee off!  But still rocking a little soul patch action.

Another "Finally Did It" Post

Well, after about 5 years of buying individual music tracks online, I finally broke down and bought a full album.  Oh, and the most surprising aspect of this historic transaction?  It wasn't from the iTunes store!  Amazon had a better deal and I wanted it to be DRM free.  Although I do kind of miss looking at the liner notes of the cd (unlike Apple, Amazon doesn't give you that digitally, or at all).

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Well...the hunt is on

The New Orleans Saints have announced their schedule and surprised me in the process.  I already knew they were coming into Washington sometime this season...but actually figured it was going to be more mid-season timeframe.  Lo and behold though, it's a week 2 game!

So yeah, 9/14/08 it is...and judging on the ticket exchange thing on the Redskins site, it's not going to be cheap.

Monday, April 14, 2008

Apple failed me...

Well, finally had to deal with Apple tech support after all of the hardware I've bought from them.  The funny thing is, it's actually on my newest piece of Apple goodness too...my Time Capsule.  That little guy has been getting a bit wonky the last week or so (after having it for a month or so).  It all worked out though, because after a 20 minute phone call with some very nice people, I'm being overnighted a replacement free of charge.

w00t.

Still waiting for the promised one

In the meantime though...please enjoy a picture of 2 slackers out and about enjoying the DC nightlife.

Stupid spam bots...and Scrubs!

Sorry that I have to inconvenience you all; but I finally had to do something to stop the spam bots.  So when you leave a comment now, you'll have to perform an extra step before your comment will be posted.

Oh, and today's a good day...because new episodes of Scrubs start tonight!

John Adams

So getting HBO for free for a few months has it's advantages, especially when it comes to the On Demand service.  I've been catching up on the "John Adams" mini series via the aforementioned service and I must say, bravo!  I've always been into US History, the revolutionary era in particular, and this does not disappoint.  Plus it doesn't hurt they filmed some of it in Williamsburg.

So if you have the means, I highly suggest you give it a try.   Or if not, wait for the inevitable DVD release.

Sunday, April 6, 2008

Went out to eat last night.

So, 2 friends of mine were having their birthday celebrations this weekend, and we ate out last night.  Some swanky Japanese Hibachi place...and I paid $18 for a plate of yakisoba!  Yes, it was good...just not $18 good.

But going out afterwords wearing a fake mustache...that's priceless.  Hopefully a picture can be posted soon, once said friends upload them from their cameras.

Stills feels good...

I got to teach again today!  I wasn't excited about the subject or how I got roped into doing it...but nevertheless I enjoyed myself!  I had to teach some higher ups in my organization about a program they will be using in the near future.  I felt totally comfortable standing up in front of them and giving out a mini lecture.

Besides that...I can't believe it's taken me this long...but I finally bought reusable bags @ the grocery store.  I was getting disgusted on how many bags I would receive with my tiny weekly shopping.  So I picked up 4...and let me tell you, they rock!  They are so sturdy, so they are a breeze to carry on the long walk from the garage, up the elevator, and down the hall to my apartment.  Oh, and they were only .99 at Harris Teeter!  Now the only problem I foresee, is forgetting them when I actually go grocery shopping...hahaha

Oh, and I stopped by the BMW dealership down the road and sat in a new 1-series...very nice. :D

A Sad Day for America.

Apparently we hit 4,000 deaths in Iraq on Easter.  Not to mention my former home in Baghdad, the Green Zone, got hit 20+ times with mortars and rockets.

Here's to a change in November...that will benefit us all.

A pic that I took right before my Iraq deployment at the end of 2006:

Scratch That

For reasons I won't get into here...I will not be driving home at all this weekend.  Sorry to disappoint anyone; but it's for my own good.  No big deal...besides, I've seen most of the family recently...and you know how much I've professed my love for being here on the weekends (the only time I really hang out with my friends).

Bored on St. Patty's

And that equals post #2 for the night...announcing what I hope already seems obvious to you. Massive changes abound! So, here's hoping you like the new look!

3 Months!

Well, I've been at my job for 3 months as of today. Not much else to say, except that I like it 95% of the time and actually enjoy my work. The next big step in life is to start school again...but I'm waiting for the fall semester for that.

Oh, and I should also mention I still love living up here in NoVA/DC. I actually don't miss the 757/Hampton Roads area as much as I thought I would. In fact, I find it hard to tear myself away from this area on the weekends (since that's when I'm usually hanging with my friends and having the most fun). I think that explains why I'm going down this weekend, but instead of doing the Friday night departure, I'm going down there Saturday evening and coming right back up sometime Sunday.

Speaking of the 757, I think I need to change the header graphic up there to reflect my new home.

Jeeves..take me to Baltimore

So last night I dragged Dan and Bobby with me to Baltimore. Lauren, a real good friend of mine, was celebrating turning the big 3-0. So we made the journey with the help of my other good friend, TomTom, seeing most of downtown Baltimore in the process. We get there, and no kidding, I was like 1 of 4 Michael/Mikes...hence where my Mikey nickname really comes in handy. Haha... anyways, we had a great time even if the bar closed early with the threat of the springing forward dancing around the employees' eyes. Anyways, thought you'd like to see my outfit from last night.

Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!!!

30 years!!!! Can you believe it? It's really quite amazing...I'mnot sure if I'll ever see that....but they are both are something to look up to! Especially when so many of my friends/peers are already divorced!

Here's to you both....and here's to another 30!

...and we won't talk about what else turns 30 this year. :P

And I want to teach?

Man, I really need to proofread before I hit that submit button. :p

Last weekend

Well....it was Hotel De Mikey like round 3 as I hosted my parents for a weekend visit. It was actually a pretty eventful weekend, even if we all wished for a little less windy weather. So, we did everything from Ikea, to the memorials, to a drive in a DC, a trip to Tyson's, and a little excursion on the Metro on the way to Hard Times Cafe. All in all, a great weekend, and perfectly timed with my 2 buds out of town.

Speaking of Hard Times, man, there must be something in the water up here. We were waited on a girl there that just floored me the whole time we were there. I swear, someone needed to pick my jaw up off the floor. As my Dad pointed out, I'm into more exotic women, and here I was staring at this girl of Arabic decent...with a couple tasteful tats no less. Man...I tempted to go back there again just to see her again (I swear I'm not a stalker!) Oh, and the Chili is awesome there too...even if my tall Newcastle cost as much as my meal. :P

Feeling better...

Still congested...but at least I'm not coughing up lungs on the daily. Although something good has come out of being sick. That would be that I've gotten into a new health kick...doing things I should have been doing for a while now. One being actually taking a multi-vitamin daily...I actually took the first one this morning and actually felt difference in terms of energy throughout the day, and it actually kept me from being starving for lunch before 11. Then with 2 out of 4 elevators in building being out until April, I actually walk up and back down from the gym (keep in mind I live on the 10th floor, and the gym is on the Penthouse AKA 17th floor).

Now can it please get warmer so I can start running outside?

Ugh...I hate being sick

So my butt has been kicked all around by some flu-like bug since Wednesday. Was already tempted to take a sick day last week (even though I haven't earned one yet), but stuck it out. Those that know me also know I like to stay away from meds...but not this time. God bless that Rite Aid right below my apartment...even if the stuff hasn't helped out all that much. Every morning I wake up hoping I slept it off to no avail...so needless to say this screwed my normal weekend activities. Stayed @ home Friday night, all day Saturday, got dragged to Dan & Bobby's last night...but I left as they were making there way out for a night on the town.

So, here it is, Sunday, and I still feel yucky. Man, I wish it wasn't too late for a flu shot. :P

Weekday trip

So last night I met up with a former Lieutenant from Langley who was with me in Iraq. He actually lives up here in NoVA; but this is the first time we had gotten together since I moved up here. We had good reason too though. That reason being, one of the British guys we worked with @ NATO (we call him Dizzy) in Baghdad was in the area. He actually works on the AWACS (Google it), so he and couple other guys were in the "area" for training. Now why did I put "area" in quotes? Because we had to drive about 70 miles out to see them. They were at Solomons Island, MD, which just happens to sit right on the Chesapeake Bay.

Never heard of it? Yeah, me either. Haha...man what a quaint little place. Although it must be nice being on the bay...but I wouldn't know; being it was in the black of night the whole time we were there. Anyways, had a grand old time hanging out with 4 Brits in this little pier side seafood place, then 2 of them retired and the rest of us tried to find a place to have a drink. Well, we found it...again a quaint place...but awesome hearing stories about the Falkland Islands from Dizzy. Then we made the drive back to DC and I was back home by midnight.

But yeah, things like this remind me how cool it was to be in the military. Something like that never would've happened if I had been a civilian my whole life. Heck, I even I have a free place to stay if I ever make it the UK!

Another "I did it" post.

Because I wanted a change...but now I want my hair back. Good thing it grows back fast huh?

Finally did it...

Even if the VA DMV was lame as heck and didn't transfer my voter registration to Arlington County...I still made a difference this week. I just got done donating a small amount to Barack Obama.

:)

Still love it here.

I'd just like to let everyone know I love hanging in D.C. with my friends. Had another awesome weekend.

Here they are...no explanation needed (hopefully).

Is this what I have to look forward to...

...as I get older? I'm talking about how time flies! It felt like just a week and some change ago that I was out celebrating the start of this year. Now here it is...pretty much February. Man, oh man...September needs to take its sweet time getting here.

One good thing about next month? I managed to squeeze 3 pay checks into the shortest month of the year! w00t!

Happy Birthday Granddad!

One of my favorite people in the world turns 80 today. Happy Birthday Granddad! I love you and can't wait to see you and Nana this weekend! :)

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Oops...forgot about that.

So, it's time for my tags to get renewed...and after spending like an hour trying to think of a Saints vanity plate (unsuccessfully), I try to renew on the DMV's website. It's then that I hit a roadblock...I need an emissions inspection to proceed.

Ahhh...the joys of living in NoVA.

I'm back...

That's right...after like 5 months, I'm finally lifting weights again. Nothing too strenuous...just some free weights to build up the arms, and some pull ups too. Basically limiting myself to my building's gym will keep me from overdoing it this time...especially since there are no machines to work on one's legs. So basically free weights for me, then either the treadmill or elliptical trainer. Then when it gets warmer, I'll run through Crystal City.

Oh, and OMG I love the new Apple notebook. Except for one thing...no built-in optical drive. :(

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Hey

Not much going on here...just working and such. One cool note is that Aaron is actually supposed to be up here this weekend. We'll probably hit a couple unique places to eat and head to Georgetown on Saturday night.

A couple monkeys off my back

Well, after 2 and a half months of not having the following: I got paid today, medical insurance, and dental coverage.

*whew*

Although there is one down note...I also got a County sticker. Yes, they still have that windshield clutterer up here in NoVA.

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Heck Yeah!

It's time to start saving money!!! I was just on the Saints site...and they will be playing the Redskins here in DC next season!!! There's no date yet...but I will be all over that as soon as tickets go up for sale!!!

Happy '08!

Well, I called it as soon as I got to the bar with the boys...but I'm hurting today. Self-inflicted hurt if you catch my drift. Anyways, thought I should get my first post of the new year up and share my outfit from last night.
